Ah, the illustrious “rest day”…
I have been lifting weights consistently for about two years now, and I can say it is a (healthy) addiction. I LOVE the challenge of preparing my weekly workouts, performing them, and then feeling the afterburn—just to wake up and do it again the next day!
Still, if you like lifting weights (or any exercise) as much as I do, you know how important it is to get your weekly rest day in. Our body benefits from the weights, yes, but we reap the real benefits during the night while we sleep and during the hours that we recover.
Also, some studies have determined that intense workouts may increase your risk for illness - eek! As weight lifters, we NEED this rest time, so we can get back to the gym. But, that doesn’t mean it’s easy to rest! If rest days make you antsy, check out this list of 7 ways to spend your rest day in Chicago. Your body will thank you!
Take a walk!
I find myself to be the most relaxed after a 30 to 60-minute walk around the block or down by the lake. Pop in a good playlist or a podcast (maybe something about weightlifting? JK!). Or, just take advantage of the outdoors and the fresh air. The amount of time we spend indoors looking at our computers, phones, Kindles and other devices is astonishing. Take time to yourself to just BE.
Check the FFC app for a yoga class!
There are tons of different kinds of yoga classes for all fitness levels that have different benefits for the body. Light activity and deep stretching will do wonders for your recovery while also feeding that itch for activity. You can also check out the group fitness schedule here! You can also try Pilates for a similar benefit!
Rent a Divvy bike!
Okay, so Divvy bikes may have gotten more expensive over the last year, but what’s a few extra dollars to help your body recover? Take it for a nice, leisurely ride and see some places you haven’t seen before.
Try out a local coffee shop outside your neighborhood.
You get the steps AND you support local business!
Sign up for Meetup.com.
Subscribe to a MeetUp group that interests you and attend something! Keeping yourself occupied at an event is a great way to keep busy.
Check out Chicago’s best free spots.
Some of my favorites include the Lakefront trail, the riverwalk, Garfield Park Conservatory, Lincoln Park Conservatory or Zoo, Maggie Daley Park, Millennium Park, Navy Pier, the 606—the list goes on! We live in a fantastic city. Go explore it!
Most importantly, REST!
Your body needs it!
